10 Ways to Keep Your Home Tidy as a Busy Parent

With spring cleaning approaching, I realize the need to reevaluate and adapt my cleaning routine during this season.

As a mom of a toddler, I find it very difficult to keep my home clean for longer than a few hours. At this stage of development, playtime is prime time; and the messier it is, the more fun it seems to be.

Interestingly, my kiddo seems to think the floor is the best place to put her toys. Apparently, the toy bin doesn’t offer her toys enough space to breathe (duh, mom).

Apart from the challenge of managing the toy bin, my daughter adores messy play. She constantly craves slime, playdoh, water beads, or sand. While sensory activities are crucial for her development, they also have led to disorganization and have drained my energy levels.

To add fuel to the fire, my daughter has entered a phase where she loves to feed her dolls and enjoys throwing crumbs in the air for a confetti-like “food party” during snack time.

Though she has gotten to an age where she is able to assist more with cleaning, having her partake in my favorite end of the day game of “feed the trash can” is simply not enough to maintain order throughout the house.

It can be overwhelming to keep the household clean, take care of kids, and juggle work responsibilities. Busy parents have to do it all, and don’t have the luxury of procrastinating. However, there are ways to keep your house tidy, even with the busiest schedule. Here are some tips for busy parents to stay on top of the housework.

1. Clean Lightly on Weekdays

Do you tend to save all your cleaning for one day on the weekend? While it may seem like it saves time to do it all in one day, it can be exhausting to tackle everything at once.

Instead, try cleaning lightly every day, so you don’t have a mountain of work to do on your days off. Spend as little as 30 minutes a day wiping down surfaces and picking up clutter. Each small effort will make the cleaning process feel easier.

2. Clean At Night

Some people have more free time when the moon is finally out. Parents can feel the same way when they put their little ones to sleep. If you can’t fall asleep, try tidying up — doing so at night can be a better option for night owls.

If your family members are light sleepers, skip the vacuum and focus on organizing. You can fold up clothes or put toys into their respective containers. Treat cleaning as a way to boost your mood and de-stress. Plus, waking up to a tidy space can be pretty satisfying.

3. Be Strategic With Furniture Choices

If you need to buy new furniture, consider function over style. For instance, if you tend to lose toys or remotes under the couch, a chair that’s lower to the ground can be harder to reach under. A sofa with taller legs will make it easier to vacuum or sweep under.

For storage options, consider drawers instead of open bookshelves. Shelves can quickly become cluttered and collect dust, whereas a drawer hides items away for less visual clutter.

4. Stock Up on Cleaning Supplies

Picture finally having some time to clean. You’re in the right headspace to get your place sorted. Suddenly, you realize you’ve run out of your favorite disinfectant.

Make sure to capitalize on those sudden energy bursts to clean by always having supplies ready. Microfiber cloths, brooms and sponges are some of the essentials. Here are some extra holy grail items to have at all times:

  • Baking soda: Baking soda can serve many purposes. Its abrasiveness and acidity make it perfect for deodorizing rugs and clearing stains. It can also get rid of stubborn bathroom and kitchen residue.
  • Vinegar: Vinegar is another crucial ingredient for many DIY cleaning solutions. Mixing it with water in a 1-to-1 ratio can refresh your windows and walls. Wipe down stove tops and sinks for good measure, too.
  • Hydrogen peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide is a fantastic multipurpose disinfectant you can use to clean up counters and cutting boards. A little goes a long way, so try diluting it with water to get more use out of one bottle.

5. Get the Rest of the Family to Help

Keeping your home tidy should be a team effort. Give your spouse and children designated chores to delegate the responsibility.

Having your children be responsible for cleaning up their rooms can teach them valuable skills. Just think, when you send them off to college, they won’t be shocked when they realize they have to clean up after themselves.

6. Keep Up Childproofing Measures

If you have a baby or toddler, you likely have all of the childproofing techniques in place. However, as your kids get older, you don’t need to remove all of it. There are a lot of benefits to keeping these measures in place.

For example, if you had any unsafe items in your home, keep them locked and stored in a secret location away from the kids. Even older children can accidentally stumble across things like chemicals, power tools, flammable items, or weapons. Anything that could cause a major mess or an injury should be stored securely, no matter your child’s age.

7. Keep Trash Cans Close By

Kids can be messy. It’s in their nature. That’s why it’s important to have a trash can in pretty much every room. If they spill their snacks in the basement, it will be easier for them to clean up if there’s a bin nearby. Similarly, when they use up a tube of toothpaste, they can throw it away immediately, rather than leaving it empty on the counter.

8. Open Up a Donation Box

Less belongings in the home means fewer things to clean and organize. Encourage your kids to put things in the box when they don’t want them anymore. You can also schedule days a few times a year to have each family member pick 10 items to donate.

9. Have a Chore Schedule

While you can keep your cleaning routines flexible, a dedicated schedule for certain chores can be good. For instance, you can dedicate Tuesdays and Thursdays to laundry days. That way, the whole family knows to collect their laundry on those days.

You can also make a chore wheel or a rotating schedule to spread out tasks fairly. For example, if one child cleaned up the playroom this week, the other can do it next week. This can keep things interesting and prevent complaints like, “Why do I always have to do it?”

10. Call in a Deep House Cleaning Service

As a busy parent, it can be good to have some backup when tidying up a home. Call a deep house cleaning service provider and schedule a session once every few months. If you can afford it, hiring a cleaning service can ease a lot of stress.
